Abstract

In many disciplines there is a need for exploring and understanding large data sets. In order to support this process it is required to develop new interaction techniques. Large high-resolution displays offer the opportunity to show a lot of information at once. This is especially useful in relation to spatial data sets. However, there are no established user interfaces for such large-screen setups. A promising approach is to connect a large high-resolution display with additional screens, such as tablets, smartphones or desktop computers. In this thesis, we design, implement and evaluate such a multi-device interface. In order to do this, we use geolocated microblog data from the Twitter service. We use tablet computers as devices for interacting with the system. As a first step, we design a number of different concepts for user interaction involving large displays and tablets. Then, we implement some of the created concepts. In order to confirm the usefulness of our system, we compare it to a reference interface for desktop computers. The results show that most users prefer interacting with the tablet interface.
