Kurzfassung

Wearables and especially smartwatches are nowadays used by many people as everyday personal companion devices. Smartwatches extend the design space of smartphones, making it possible to receive notifications in a more direct manner, and access important information at a glance. These aspects of today’s smartwatches make them potentially useful not only for daily life but as assistant devices for industrial maintenance tasks. This thesis presents a concept and a prototypical implementation of such a wearable notification system for industrial maintenance tasks, based on Android Wear. The implemented prototype is evaluated in an industrial environment to find answers about the usability and user acceptance of this wrist-worn approach. Furthermore, it’s potential of complementing or replacing existing maintenance task support systems is discussed and capabilities, as well as limitations of the prototype, are presented. Finally, alternative approaches using different wearable devices for this use case are discussed that may be evaluated in the future.
