Abstract

The number of notications increases by installing new applications, getting a smart device or signing up a service. Considering that users want to receive all these notications, we need a broad selection of notication methods that t the information’s context. In this paper, we investigate shape-changing interfaces as a novel mechanism for notifying users in an ambient way. First, we investigate dierent kinds of information suitable for shape-changing interfaces by conducting an interview study. The results of this study show that information about weather like temperature and humidity is most preferable as the information is retrieved often. Therefore, we implement a physical bar chart prototype displaying temperature and humidity information. In our focus group study, we investigated how users would integrate a physical bar chart display in their daily life. We used our implemented prototype to investigate if the displayed information is easy to understand and what are important functions and design factors of a physical bar chart display for climate information. Results show that participants see device size and form, physical bar orientation, scale and color as crucial factors regarding acceptance of physical bar chart designs. Therefore, we propose to apply all improvements mentioned by our participants in a second prototype iteration in order to conduct a long term study in users’ home.
