Abstract

In this thesis we developed an input method for touch screen devices, which goes beyond a point-based control of using finger tips. Our method can use information of whole fingers that touch the screen. A prototype was developed that recognizes whole fingers and displays them on-screen as lines in the shape of that finger. This form of input extends the known possible input dimensions, e.g. with the form respectively the curvature of the finger, the length of the finger or the amount of fingers. We conducted several focus groups and presented this prototype, to determine the acceptance of this new form of input and to explore applicable use cases. The most frequently mentioned use cases were implemented and tested during a user study regarding usability and efficiency. The study concluded that not only our input method could compete with the state-of-the-art method but was as efficient and as fast. The subjective feedback of our participants confirmed this and the majority was excited and stated that they would even use it privately with their own smartphone. We designed our input method to work with every off-the-shelf smartphone. The only requirement would be a software update of the specific device. 5
