Abstract

Despite the massive rise in popularity of smartphones nearly a decade ago, the way we interact with them has not changed. This thesis focuses on assessing the various methods of implementing yaw and pitch detection in smartphones. To do this, the methods devised by two past papers will be implemented with the predicted pitch and yaw angles from the algorithms being compared to the actual angles captured by OptiTrack cameras with the help from reflection markers. Furthermore, this thesis will expand on the methods used by the previous two papers in order to improve the usability and accuracy when using the system. These methods will then be evaluated through user studies with smartphones and smartphone applications tailored for accepting the pose of the user’s finger as an input. The results from the study will then be used to evaluate whether using finger pose as a way to interact with the device can be used as a successful method for adding an input modality for everyday users.
