Kurzfassung

This thesis will give an introduction to force-directed dot plots, obstacles during their creation process and a short view on possible future additions. Nonlinear dot plots are a type of frequency plots that can be used to visually summarize data with high dynamic range. Force-directed dot plots are an evolution of nonlinear dot plots. A nonlinear dot plot is calculated with a sweep algorithm, whereas a force-directed dot plot uses simulated forces to generate a dot distribution. We created a library for JavaScript, that can be used to build interactive force-directed dot plots. The implementation was tested by visually comparing different pictures of force-directed dot plots, linear dot plots, and nonlinear dot plots. Results of this evaluation show, that the shape of the plot is smoother, than the shapes generated by the sweep layouts and that the simulation can handle up to 7,500 dots well.
