Kurzfassung

Manipulation of distant objects in a mixed reality environment is an important research topic in the field of mixed reality human computer interfaces. A lot of different methods have been suggested in the past and new research is still completed regularly. With the advent of more powerful head-mounted displays it is more important than ever to find the best way of interacting with virtual objects around us. This is why we propose E-Pad, a planar virtual user interface, a user interface that follows the user and allows interaction with already selected objects no matter the distance. Our system is built modular, which means that translation, rotation and scaling are separated and different modules with different functionality can be used. In this thesis we created two methods of translation, one method of scaling and three methods of rotation. We conducted a within-group user study with seven (n=7) participants, testing all combinations of these interaction methods against each other. As a comparison we included MRTK's ray based pointer for distant interactions in the study. All systems were tested on the task of matching one object's transformation with a transparent clone of that object located around the user. We collected data on the users' performances and their subjective opinion of the system using the SUS questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. Our results show that the system had a few key points that need improvement before it can be an alternative input method, but it could certainly have potential if our system is further explored in the future.
