Abstract

Cloud solutions and cloud storage in particular have reached high importance in business environments and with the rising demand, the market has grown as well. A multitude of different vendors is offering individual solutions, including their own sets of functions and user interfaces. Different companies often rely on different systems and with business to business cooperation being as relevant as ever, working on data stored by different vendors is often inevitable. The basic architecture of the underlying file system though is shared by all vendors and can serve as foundation for creating one unified view for data on all systems. This work investigates the idea of an abstraction layer, that is capable to fetch, unify and display data from arbitrary vendors. As a proof of concept, a prototype of this abstraction layer is developed and then validated by experimentally examining its benefits for users working with different clouds. After successfully implementing the prototype, a significant reduction of complexity and time consumption is found for one of two tasks and a clear improvement of user satisfaction is shown for all workflows.
