Kurzfassung

Highlighting objects or points of interest within a virtual environment is relevant when aiming to guide a user’s attention, as these environments can be crowded with visual stimuli. To achieve effective and immersive highlighting, it is necessary to find suitable techniques. The use of such highlighting techniques is a common practice within video games. This thesis aims to investigate whether video game-based highlighting techniques can be used in the Virtual Reality to effectively attract the user attention while maintaining the immersion in this virtual world. To do this, we first analyzed which techniques are used in video games and then implemented three video game-based techniques (Outline and Marking, Icon and Lightbeam) and one research-based technique (HiveFive). Additionally, we implemented two different environments, a Library and a Meadow, in which we compare the four techniques in a comparative user study on efficiency and user experience. The study showed that Outline and Marking was in general the most effective technique in terms of Completion Time and additionally was rated the most immersive technique. Other techniques often suffer from problems within one of the environments. For example, Lightbeam suffers from occlusion problems in the Library. This shows that video game-based highlighting techniques can be used to effectively guide the attention, while the effectiveness and immersion of some techniques depend on the context in which they are used. Developers should therefore adapt highlighting techniques to the specific environments in which they will be used.
