| Abstract | In the field of audiovisual analytics, emotions are increasingly acknowledged as a crucial factor in the communication and interpretation of data. Prior research has demonstrated that emotions significantly influence individuals’ perceptions of information, while auditory stimuli, particularly music, have proven effective in eliciting emotional responses. These insights suggest that sound may play a role in shaping how people comprehend and engage with data. To explore this hypothesis, a user study was conducted employing a qualitative co-design approach. Participants were presented with a data visualization and tasked with creating their own sonifications aimed at evoking either a sense of uncertainty or a sense of neutrality. The study revealed that white noise and sounds featuring oscillating effects were perceived as effective in evoking uncertainty, whereas neutrality was more strongly associated with comparatively monotonous or simple sounds. This insight may prove valuable for future designers of audiovisual analytics systems, offering a design consideration for the integration of emotional responses in data interpretation. To ensure transparency and reproducibility, the study was preregistered on the Open Science Framework (OSF) at https://osf.io/mnef7.
