Abstract | Grid computing provides an infrastructure that enables pervasive and inexpensive use of distributed computing resources. These resources involve both software and hardware components, which are highly heterogeneous. Thus, grid computing provides high performance computing pools that can be used dynamically by different applications taking the requirements of each application into account. Currently grids are still mostly used by scientific applications in the area of high performance computing. The scope of grids moves however from e-science toward e-business, to business grids. In future, grid computing will be used by business applications and will provide many economic advantages for enterprises. This thesis introduces a definition of the term 'business grid' and analyses how workflow systems and web services can be used for business grid implementations.
