Abstract

Today, many Software Engineers in Germany and India hold a degree in Computer Science or similar. However, little is known about the differences between the university education in both countries. This thesis compares in detail the Computer Science and Software Engineering programs at the University of Stuttgart, and the Computer Science programs at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, in order to evaluate the education of prospective Software Engineers at the two universities.

In interviews with software companies in India and Germany, the desired skills for Software Engineers have been identified. Based on this information, and on the results of surveys conducted among students and graduates, the differences between the programs have been evaluated. It is shown that all programs have particular strengths and weaknesses. The Software Engineering program in Stuttgart has advantages over the Computer Science programs in terms of Software Engineering education and practice orientation, while the Computer Science programs provide a better general education in Computer Science. It is also shown that in all programs, soft skills are not adequately addressed in the curriculum.

Recommendations for the universities have been derived from the results of the evaluation. The recommendations allow both universities to learn from each other, in order to improve the education of Software Engineers.
