Abstract

Search Results Presentation in a Specialised Search Engine for Innovation Officers

Web search engines are one of the most important information sources used in innovation management. However, innovation officers have needs that are quite different from those of regular Internet users, which justifies the development of special search concepts for this target group. This thesis presents some of these concepts using the example of press releases, with a focus on the pres-entation of search results. Press releases constitute an interesting source of information for innova-tion management and possess several characteristics that make them appropriate for an automatic processing. Based upon comparison of today’s most important textual and graphical search engines on the one hand and of many press releases websites on the other, a new search engine dedicated to innovation managers is designed and a prototype is developed. Based on several use cases, this the-sis explains how using the specific characteristics of press releases can help to suggest special search options that go further than those traditionally proposed by classic search engines. In addi-tion, we show how combining the use of statistical data and traditional search results can help inno-vation managers to extract meaningful facts from an amount of press releases (for trend monitoring, competence cluster identification and geographical localization, or detection and visualization of relationships between organizations). Following a detailed discussion of the achieved results, fur-ther possibilities of extending the developed prototype and integrating it into a broader innovation search portal are shown.
