| Abstract | The rise of data as a primary asset is profoundly altering digital ecosystem, with data scientists being the architects of data-driven value creation. In light of this, legislative bodies worldwide are initiating new legal frameworks to ensure responsible data handling. The European Union is at the forefront of this progress with its comprehensive data strategy encompassing the Data Governance Act, the Data Act, and the AI Act. Although these regulations emphasize trustworthy data management and sharing, recent studies reveal a considerable lack of preparation among companies. This paper utilizes the EU data strategy as a paradigmatic case to illuminate the profound implications for data scientists in digital ecosystems arising from prospective international data regulations. We analyze the far-reaching requirements for data portability, data management, data quality, transparency, and privacy. As a central contribution, we present a holistic approach, based on the data-as-product paradigm, which enables a systematic and practical implementation of these legal requirements. Our work aims to provide data scientists with strategies for action to ensure the legal sustainability of digital ecosystems.
