Abstract

New technology capabilities are changing products, services, and internal processes driven by competition and customer expectations. In order to increase efficiency and effectiveness, companies are carrying out a digital transformation. But digital transformation is not just the integration of digital technologies into all areas of the company that wants to make a fundamental change. It is also a cultural change in which companies must constantly challenge, experiment, and accept mistakes. Digital transformation is an unavoidable process for most companies. Strong competition and growing customer expectations are forcing companies to become part of the digital transformation. Especially in the field of IT development, this process is even crucial for future success and competitiveness. Increasing customer expectations and changing technical capabilities are exerting pressure on IT development. But the transformation process can be complex for many companies. Initiatives need to be launched in order to transform not only the internal but also the customer world. This thesis examines possible success factors for managing digital transformation initiatives in the context of a software engineering department. In the process, challenges from other companies are considered and an overview is provided. Furthermore, different areas of digital transformation are explored and their impact on the company, the product, and the customer are discussed. This work is an action research in which an active attempt is made to drive digital transformation internally. As a final objective, a strategic framework is provided that supports organizations to drive digital transformation. The goal of this work is to obtain a better understanding of a successful transformation process and to present factors that play an important role as part of this ongoing process.
