Kurzfassung

In recent years, modern cars have had drastic changes in their functionality and design space, enabling sophisticated infotainment systems, including interactive and adaptive applications to enhance the driving experience. While the latest research focuses on the integration of adaptive behavior, especially in advanced driver-assistance systems, they do not consider adapting the navigation application’s user interface and its points of interest (POI) recommendations to the context of the drive. However, there are several interesting places on the route that can enhance the travel experience if presented to the driver in an exciting fashion. Therefore in this master thesis, we aimed to explore different possible visualization and adaptation concepts centered around POI recommendations in navigation applications. To this extent, we conducted a user experience study with nine participants to determine the requirements of our concepts. Furthermore, we propose five different adaptive concepts that can be used in conjunction with each other to increase the driving experience and driver safety. To test the validity of these concepts, we set up user tests with twelve participants in a simulated driving environment. While testing two of our concepts, „Information Complexity Adaptation“ and „Route Familiarity Adaptation“, in this environment, we identified numerous interesting findings. For example, adapting the amount of information shown about POIs to the difficulty of the driving situation can be beneficial in minimizing the time needed to interact with the navigation system in demanding driving situations, which may increase driver safety. Second, adapting the POIs to the driver’s familiarity with the route by complementing standard POIs with temporal POIs in known environments can lead to an increase in user engagement. As such, our work contributes to the development of future adaptive in-car navigation applications that make interactions more engaging while respecting the safety of drivers.
