Abstract

Context. Virtual Reality is a widely used technology, in which gestures are commonly used as an input input method for applications. Problem. Gesture recognition is prone to errors. Such recognition errors can yield frustration, which can further cause users to abandon the application altogether or have a bad image of the underlying brand. Objective. Our research aims to understand the behavior of a user’s frustration under varying fail rates for the recognition of certain gestures and the frequency of occurrence of error-prone gestures. Finally, we also we also aim to explore whether lower frequencies of occurrence in error-prone gestures lessen the impact of their errors on the users’ frustration. Method. We created a Virtual Reality game in which the fail rates and task frequencies for a chosen gesture can be varied. We also implemented distractor tasks, which used other gestures that were not manipulated to fail purposefully. Our test subjects completed six trials with varying fail rates and task frequencies. Furthermore, we assessed data with two different questionnaires. One questionnaire is a NASA-TLX, which assesses the over all cognitive demand of the test subject. The other questionnaire is a Likert scale questionnaire, which asks about the user’s frustration, fun, and perceived performances specifically for each of the tasks in each trial. Result. While we were able to observe promising trends for the task frequency’s impact on the frustration of the users and significant effects of the fail rate on the frustration in our Likert scale questionnaires, our results could, ultimately, not reveal any statistically significant effects on the over all frustration of the user reported by the NASA-TLX questionnaire. Conclusion. The results of our experiment raised the question whether subjective measures are sufficient to make conclusions on nuanced, frustration-related questions under varying conditions. We suggest conducting future work with objective measures such as heart rate and Galvanic skin response alongside subjective measures to analyze the possible nuances of frustration-related research.
