Abstract

Dashboards are widely used as a compact display of data. In a scenario with asymmetric teacherstudent roles, a real-time dashboard with eye gaze visualizations can help the teacher keep track of the students’ attention. My application was designed for a similar use case, an instructor guiding novice players in a tabletop game. The main focus is put on the Gaze Transition Entropy (GTE) metric. The real-time dashboard visualizes recent player gazes and Regions of Interest (ROIs), calculates metrics after every interval and shows the sequence of GTE values over time for every player. The user can interact with the User Interface to hide certain players or view history data. I conducted a small user study with a cooperative search game, which found that my application was easy to use and helped the instructor with player guidance. Some participants did not use all of the available visualizations and focused mainly on guiding players, while others were interested in finding differences in player behavior using the GTE metric. Additionally, I found that GTE can have a different meaning from solitary work when investigated in a competitive multiplayer environment or a collaborative search task.
