Abstract | Spatial- and location-aware computing has evolved to be one of the most thrilling topics in today's research of information science. In the context of the Nexus Platform, a global infrastructure is being developped to support applications based on the location of objects of the real world and the spatial relationship between them.
One part of the Nexus project deals with the development of an Event Service which manages location-related events that can occur, for example a person entering a building or a tourist being in the vicinity of a budget hotel. For the management of these events, event sources are required, which are the place where events originally become visible.
One such event source will be the Nexus Location Service which stores highly dynamic location information of mobile objects. This thesis will show how the functionality of an event source can be integrated into the Nexus Location Service. We will define a set of events suitable for observing changes specific to mobile objects and their location, and which can be used to construct more complex events in the Event Service.
By very detailed analysis of the underlying geometric properties of the event mechanism we will tackle the task of event observation. Based on these results, we will explore the area of index structures and make decisions to find an appropriate storage model for location-related events. We will show by examining a prototype implementation that makes use of the chosen index structures how the event mechanism will perform, and that it fulfills the requirements for being used as an event source for the Nexus Event Service.
