abstract = {Application systems in the earth observation area can be characterised as
distributed, platform-inhomogeneous, complex, and cost intensive information
systems. In order to manage the complexity and performance requirements set by
these application scenarios a number of architectural considerations have to be
applied. Among others the most important ones are modularization towards a
component architecture and interoperation within this component model. As will
be described in this paper, both are mandatory to achieving a high degree of
reusability and extensibility at the component level as well as to support the
necessary scalability properties. In our paper we refer to the state of the art
in earth observation application systems as well as to a prototype system that
reflects to a high degree the above mentioned system characteristics.},

abstract = {In this paper we describe the design and implementation of a CORBA Query
Service targeted to access data that is defined by the EXPRESS data modeling
language. EXPRESS is used primarily in engineering domains (like CAD/CAM and
GIS) to describe mostly product model data (like parts explosion or product
geometry). In order to bring query facilities for EXPRESS-based data to CORBA a
number of design decisions have to be taken, although the CORBA Query Service
is standardized by the OMG. Among the most important and performance-indicating
decisions are the definition of an appropriate query language and the
description of the query result data structures. In this paper we discuss
solutions to these topics and report on the experiences gained in designing and
implementing our first CORBA Query Service for EXPRESS-based Data.},

abstract = {Currently parallel object-relational database technology is setting the
direction for the future of data management. A central enhancement of
object-relational database technology is the possibility to execute arbitrary
user-defined functions within SQL statements. We show the limits of this
approach and propose user-defined table operators as a new concept that allows
the definition and implementation of arbitrary user-defined N-ary database
operators, which can be programmed using SQL or Embedded SQL (with some
extensions). Our approach leads to a new dimension of extensibility that allows
to push more application code into the server with full support for efficient
execution and parallel processing. Furthermore it allows performance
enhancements of orders of magnitude for the evaluation of many queries with
complex user-defined functions as we show for two concrete examples. Finally,
our implementation perception guarantees that this approach fits well into the
architectures of commercial object-relational database management systems.},

abstract = {Data mining has been recognised as an essential element of decision support,
which has increasingly become a focus of the database industry. Like all
computationally expensive data analysis applications, for example Online
Analytical Processing (OLAP), performance is a key factor for usefulness and
acceptance in business. In the course of the CRITIKAL project (Client-Server
Rule Induction Technology for Industrial Knowledge Acquisition from Large
Databases), which is funded by the European Commission, several kinds of
architectures for data mining were evaluated with a strong focus on high
performance. Specifically, the data mining techniques association rule
discovery and decision tree induction were implemented into a prototype. We
present the architecture developed by the CRITIKAL consortium and compare it to
alternative architectures.},

abstract = {One of the main tasks of workflow management systems is the coordination of
activities in business processes. In this paper, a solution framework is
introduced to support adaptive workflows with complex and unstructured task
dependencies. In chapter one the research direction is motivated and a short
overview of the PoliFlow project is given. Then, requirements for enterprise
process management systems are identified with a special focus on coordination
and control of unstructured processes. Taking these requirements as a basis, an
integrated approach for adaptive workflow support is presented. A flexible
workflow model including advanced control structures allows actors to modify
workflow instances during runtime. Finally, a reference architecture is
proposed. By example of the SWATS system, it is illustrated how an adaptive
support layer can be integrated to extend existing workflow management systems.
The paper concludes with an overview over the current state of the work and
future issues.},
