abstract = {In the domain of machine engineering the reuse of design data is an important
but complex instrument to improve quality and shorten development time. The
successful reuse of design data requires both, a machine engineering specific
methodology and the support by appropriate information system technology. In
this paper we introduce a machine engineering methodology that is based on
several reuse stages. Our approach to support the methodology with an
appropriate information system uses a simple graph based information model
where reuse stages are re- flected as layers. We also show how reuse is
represented in the model.},

abstract = {In this paper we describe the implementation of a service-based application
integration solution for the complex domain of Earth Observation (EO)
application systems. The presented approach is based on an EO integration
framework. It supports the concatenation of disparate software applications to
flexible EO process chains. Resulting EO services are provided to end users by
means of Web Service technology. We demonstrate that current standard
technology is not sufficient to dynamically publish and interactively invoke EO
services over the Web. We describe necessary extensions and adaptations.},

abstract = {An Earth Observation (EO) integration framework is an application integration
solution for sup-porting the development and execution of EO services. EO
services are based on the intensive use of large data sets from space. They
process raw EO data sets into increasingly specialized products until a certain
level of quality is achieved. This processing requires the tight cooperation of
several distributed experts, and intensive computation across a coordinated
sequence of both, interactive and automatic processing steps. Appropriate
examples for such EO services are the generation of weather forecasts, forest
fire detection, and oil slick monitoring. EO services can be characterized as
highly flexible structures, which constantly need to be adapted to evolving
spacecraft and proc-essing technologies. We suggest a model-driven EO
integration framework solution that adequately copes with the flexible
development, customization, and execution of reusable EO services. Our
prototype includes a comprehensive integration model that accurately handles
system metadata throughout the software life cycle, and significantly enhances
the EO service development process in terms of quality, reuse, and
adaptability. The prototype employs repository technology for man-aging model
related issues, as well as workflow and Web service technology for execution
pur-poses. It is mainly built upon commercial products, which are seamlessly
combined by appropriate 'glue' components.},

abstract = {This demo shows several advanced use cases of location-based services and
demonstrates how these use cases are facilitated by a mediation middleware for
spatial information, the Nexus Platform. The scenario shows how a mobile user
can access location-based information via so called Virtual Information Towers,
register spatial events, send and receive geographical messages or find her
friends by displaying other mobile users. The platform facilitates these
functions by transparently combining spatial data from a dynamically changing
set of data providers, tracking mobile objects and observing registered spatial
events.},

abstract = {Relational OLAP tools and other database applications generate sequences of SQL
statements that are sent to the database server as result of a single
information request provided by a user. Unfortunately, these sequences cannot
be processed efficiently by current database systems because they typically
optimize and process each statement in isolation. We propose a practical
approach for this optimization problem, called ``coarse-grained optimization,''
complementing the conventional query optimization phase. This new approach
exploits the fact that statements of a sequence are correlated since they
belong to the same information request. A lightweight heuristic optimizer
modifies a given statement sequence using a small set of rewrite rules. Since
the optimizer is part of a separate system layer, it is independent of but can
be tuned to a specific underlying database system. We discuss implementation
details and demonstrate that our approach leads to significant performance
improvements.},

abstract = {The turbulent markets lead to new challenges for today’s enterprises, they have
to be transformable to stay competitive. Therefore, we developed a new approach
that integrates Logistic Simulation and Layout Planning to fulfil the goal of
improving the production system. Our approach is based on propagation and
transformation of data changes concerning the continuous adaptation tasks among
the Layout Planning and Logistics Simulation systems. Instead of relying on a
tightly integrated global data schema, we connect systems only as far as
required by building “bridges” between them. The systems that participate in
the integration are kept autonomous. We use several state-of-the-art XML
technologies in our integration system.},

abstract = {SQL-based data mining algorithms are rarely used in practice today. Most
performance experiments have shown that SQL-based approaches are inferior to
main-memory algorithms. Nevertheless, database vendors try to integrate
analysis functionalities to some extent into their query execution and
optimization components in order to narrow the gap between data and processing.
Such a database support is particularly important when data mining applications
need to analyze very large datasets or when they need access current data, not
a possibly outdated copy of it.
We investigate approaches based on SQL for the problem of finding frequent
itemsets in a transaction table, including an algorithm that we recently
proposed, called Quiver, which employs universal and existential
quantifications. This approach employs a table schema for itemsets that is
similar to the commonly used vertical layout for transactions: each item of an
itemset is stored in a separate row. We argue that expressing the frequent
itemset discovery problem using quantifications offers interesting
opportunities to process such queries using set containment join or set
containment division operators, which are not yet available in commercial
database systems. Initial performance experiments reveal that Quiver cannot be
processed efficiently by commercial DBMS. However, our experiments with query
execution plans that use operators realizing set containment tests suggest that
an efficient processing of Quiver is possible.},

abstract = {The F{\"o}deral system is a flexible repository for the management, integration and
modeling of product data. Current systems in this domain employ object-oriented
data models. Whereas this is adequate for the management of product data, it
proves insufficient for integration and modeling. Present semistructured data
models, however, are suited ideally for integration, but data management and
also modeling is a problem. In this paper we describe our approach to narrow
down the gap between structured and semistructured data models. We present the
F{\"o}deral information system which employs a new semistructured data model and
show how this model can be employed in the context of management, integration,
and modeling of engineering data.},

design and engineering, exploits common work and information spaces. In this
paper we present the Transaction-Oriented Group and Coordination Service for
Data-Centric Applications (TOGA) and the DataPropagator CHAMPAGNE that together
realize a shared information space that is controlled by a basic collaboration
service. Our approach enables both, firstly, the evolution of a set of separate
applications to form a cooperative information system, i.e. it provides a
technique towards component-oriented system engineering. Secondly, it can be
exploited as a basic service within collaboration frameworks to effectively
manage common work and information spaces.},

generierte Anfragesequenzen im Bereich Business Intelligence erl{\"a}utert. Darauf
aufbauend wird eine Reihe anwendungsneutraler Optimierungsstrategien erl{\"a}utert
und bewertet. Anhand von Messergebnissen wird gezeigt, dass es sich
insbesondere bei der Restrukturierung von Anfragesequenzen um einen
vielversprechenden Ansatz handelt.},

abstract = {Queries containing universal quantification are used in many applications,
including business intelligence applications and in particular data mining. We
present a comprehensive survey of the structure and performance of algorithms
for universal quantification. We introduce a framework that results in a
complete classification of input data for universal quantification. Then we go
on to identify the most efficient algorithm for each such class. One of the
input data classes has not been covered so far. For this class, we propose
several new algorithms. Thus, for the first time, we are able to identify the
optimal algorithm to use for any given input dataset.
These two classifications of optimal algorithms and input data are important
for query optimization. They allow a query optimizer to make the best selection
when optimizing at intermediate steps for the quantification problem.
In addition to the classification, we show the relationship between relational
division and the set containment join and we illustrate the usefulness of
employing universal quantifications by presenting a novel approach for frequent
itemset discovery.},

abstract = {Today, it is common that enterprises manage several mostly heterogeneous
information systems to supply their production and business processes with
data. There is a need to exchange data between the information systems while
preserving system autonomy. Hence, an integration approach that relies on a
single global enterprise data schema is ruled out. This is also due to the
widespread usage of legacy systems. We propose a system, called Propagation
Manager, which manages dependencies between data objects stored in different
information systems. A script specifying complex data transformations and other
sophisticated activities, like the execution of external programs, is
associated with each dependency. For example, an object update in a source
system can trigger data transformations of the given source data for each
destination system that depends on the object. Our system is implemented using
current XML technologies. We present the architecture and processing model of
our system and demonstrate the benefit of our approach by illustrating an
extensive example scenario.},
