abstract = {This paper presents flashWeb, a Computer-Aided Web Engineering (CAWE) tool for the model-driven development of web applications that focus on data management. Present-day web applications, like on-line auction systems or enterprise web portals require comprehensive data access, data processing and data manipulation capabilities. However, existing web application development approaches treat data management operations as second-class citizens. They integrate data operations into existing models or derive them as a by-product of business processes. We argue that data management is an important part of the application logic hence we capture operations with an additional Operation Model. We show that the explicit modeling of operations provides many benefits that distinguish our solution from other approaches. We present the flashWeb development process utilizing a graphical notation for the models in use, a CAWE tool that supports the creation of the graphical models and a code generator that creates ready-to-run web applications.},

abstract = {This paper presents an approach to provide a Constraint Service for XML-based Data Integration Systems. Constraints from local data sources and global constraints are expressed in a uniform constraint model based on Active XQuery and are stored in Constraint Repository. We introduce the concept of Constraint Wrapper and translate local constraints from data sources automatically into the uniform constraint model through Constraint Wrapper with the help of schema mapping information. The Constraint Service can be published as web service and be invoked by different Data Integration Systems. Through the Constraint Service, queries can be optimized, and global updates can be checked for validity and integrity. We establish the DIS-CS system to facilitate both the architecture and the implementation. We carry out experiments of Semantic Query Optimization using Constraints. The results show that the performance of the queries is greatly improved.},

These applications need context information, which should be shared between different applications to reduce the effort of modeling, obtaining, and managing. In the Nexus project, a context sharing platform was developed that allows for global, open context access of different applications. In this paper, different aspects of this work are illustrated: how a global access can be achieved by a federation approach, how these models can be active to support event observation and notification, how the third dimension can be introduced in the modeling and finally, how this leads to advanced applications that augment our reality with virtual information. Finally, an outlook into the vision of the World Wide Space is given.},

abstract = {Calendar-based pattern mining aims at identifying patterns on specific calendar partitions. Potential calendar partitions are for example: every Monday, every first working day of each month, every holiday. Providing flexible mining capabilities for calendar-based partitions is especially challenging in a data stream scenario. The calendar partitions of interest are not known a priori and at each point in time only a subset of the detailed data is available. We show how a data warehouse approach can be applied to this problem. The data warehouse that keeps track of frequent itemsets holding on different partitions of the original stream has low storage requirements. Nevertheless, it allows to derive sets of patterns that are complete and precise. This work demonstrates the effectiveness of our approach by a series of experiments.},

abstract = {In order to optimize their revenues and profits, an increasing number of businesses organize their business activities in terms of business processes. Typically, they automate important business tasks by orchestrating a number of applications and data stores. Obviously, the performance of a business process is directly dependent on the efficiency of data access, data processing, and data management. In this paper, we propose a framework for the optimization of data processing in business processes. We introduce a set of rewrite rules that transform a business process in such a way that an improved execution with respect to data management can be achieved without changing the semantics of the original process. These rewrite rules are based on a semi-procedural process graph model that externalizes data dependencies as well as control flow dependencies of a business process. Furthermore, we present a multi-stage control strategy for the optimization process. We illustrate the benefits and opportunities of our approach through a prototype implementation. Our experimental results demonstrate that independent of the underlying database system performance gains of orders of magnitude are achievable by reasoning about data and control in a unified framework.},

abstract = {Context-aware applications adapt their behavior based on changes of the physical world, which is often obtained with a huge amount of sensors. Thus, the development of such applications is cumbersome, in particular the implementation of their often complex control flow. To ease the development of context-aware applications we present the concept of context-aware workflows. Thereafter we present an implementation of these concepts based on a standard workflow language. Context-aware workflows are not only interesting for the development of context-aware applications, but also enable workflow technology to be applied in new domains that are process oriented and yet not supported by workflow systems like production processes in the manufacturing industry. The concept of context-aware workflows is a first approach that enables modeling and execution of technical production processes with workflow systems normally used for business processes.},

A drawback ofthese tools is the missing functionality to exchange or integratemodels of different EAI products. Consequently, developers candescribe real heterogeneous IT environments only partially. Ourgoal is to avoid the creation of these so-called ‘integrationislands’. For that purpose we present an approach whichintroduces an abstract view by technology-independent andmultivendor-capable modeling for both development andmaintenance. With this approach, we propose a toolset- andrepository-based refinement of the abstract view to automate theimplementation with real products and the deployment on realplatforms.},

abstract = {A broad range of approaches to semantic document retrieval has been developed in the context of the Semantic Web. This survey builds bridges among them. We introduce a classification scheme for semantic search engines and clarify terminology. We present an overview of ten selected approaches and compare them by means of our classification criteria. Based on this comparison, we identify not only common concepts and outstanding features, but also open issues. Finally, we give directions for future application development and research.},

abstract = {Message from the General Chairs The last two decades have seen a radical change in the way computers and computing are embedded in society. Historically, the Personal Computer and the Internet were the milestones that changed both the computer industry and the way society perceived computers. Today, mobility and the pervasive use of computing devices have resulted in a fundamental change in paradigm. Data is no longer static, residing on a disk and on a personal computer. Now data is something available everywhere, through a multitude of commodity devices and constantly broadcast through a variety of channels. The impact on industry and on the way we work with data has become obvious. For instance, portable digital music players are forcing the music industry to change its business model, soon the same will happen with video and television. Similarly, some major telecommunication companies have recently embarked in an effort to replace the old phone network with an IP based solution for all forms of communication, thereby blurring even further the boundaries between communication and computation. The International Conference on Mobile Data Management lies at the heart of all these changes. In the same way that the Personal Computer and the first spreadsheet revolutionized the industry, the new world of pervasive and ubiquitous access to information requires new approaches to the way we deal with data. And these new approaches need appropriate venues to be presented and discussed. Taking place in Mannheim, Germany, MDM 2007 aims at serving as both as a top research conference as well as a catalyst for new ideas and increased interactions between research and industry. With an excellent technical program encompassing research papers and demonstrators, and the complement of several seminars and workshops dedicated, MDM 2007 has become the leading research venue for innovative research in all aspects data management related to mobile, wearable, and pervasive computing. The success of MDM 2007 is nevertheless not due solely to the importance of the area. Organizing a conference requires the concerted effort of many individuals during a prolonged period of time, often extending well beyond the conference itself. As the Conference Chairs, we would like express our thanks and gratitude to all those who have helped to make MDM 2007 possible. First and foremost to the PC Chairs: Christian Becker, Christian Jensen, and Jianwen Su, who have put together an excellent technical program. The program has been complemented by an exciting demo track thanks to the efforts of Dieter Pfoser. Panels, seminars, and workshops round up the program and have helped to make the conference more attractive. The have been coordinated by Agnes Voisard, Ralf Hartmut G{\"u}ting, and Birgitta K{\"o}nig-Ries, respectively. Special thanks go to Daniela Nicklas for her efforts with the proceedings and to Torben Weis for taking care of financial and budget matters. Klemens B{\"o}hm and Arno Jacobsen were in charge of publicity and advertising the conference. Last but not least, we want to thank the local organizers, who have done a great job in taking care of all the menial but often cumbersome aspects of running a conference: Christian Becker, Wolfgang Effelsberg, Armin Heinzl, and Martin Schader. Looking forward to seeing you in Mannheim! Gustavo Alonso and Pedro Jose Marron General Chairs},
